OpenLabelEngine questions and answers
Start with these answers, then follow the guide for the workflow you want to evaluate.
Is the core free to self-host?
The Community core has no license charge and uses AGPL-3.0. Infrastructure, administration and any agreed commercial services remain part of your operating costs. Read the core licensing and self-hosting guide and the published commercial models.
Can I migrate from NiceLabel?
OpenLabelEngine has import paths for .nlbl labels and .misx automation files. Review the generated documents, diagnostics, annotations, missing assets and required connections with representative source files.
OpenLabelEngine also includes a Forms Builder and form runtime with input validation and label previews. Creating a guided operator form is separate from automatically converting a complete PowerForms application; evaluate the application you need to migrate.

Do I need to open firewall ports for the Runner?
The Runner, shown in the product as an Automation Service, initiates its connection to the Center. A deployed workflow with a TCP listening trigger can open its configured port on the Runner and may require an inbound firewall rule.
Check the Center, printer and data-source connections required by your workflow. The Automation Service guide and network setup instructions explain what to configure.
What printing paths are supported?
The current paths include network ZPL, local RAW queues through the Windows spooler or Linux CUPS, and Windows driver printing through GDI. Print Center also supports PDF output.
Choose the path for your printer, operating system and media. ZPL and RAW pass-through require a device that understands the generated printer commands; Windows GDI uses an installed driver. Evaluate the specific device and settings with a representative label.
A successful queue handoff is recorded as sent. Physical confirmation depends on the printing path and device. See the printer connection matrix and printer recovery guide.
